This historic hacienda with Mexican décor and modern amenities was built in the 1860s by the Domínguez family during the sugar cane era. Some decades later, the building was donated for the purpose of establishing an academy of art for young women. After the revolution, the academy was turned into the Normal School´s boarding house for professors-in-training from all over the state of Baja California Sur.
From the 1950s to the early 1970s, this building served as the town hall (delegación), which was relocated to the main plaza. More recently, legendary professor Néstor Agúndez hosted a boarding house for high school students in this historic building. The construction was left uninhabited for some years until restoration began in 2009 under the supervision of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), and the hotel opened its doors in 2010.

The name “Guaycura” (pronounced Y-KOO-RA) originated with the indigenous tribes that first inhabited this oasis. In their everyday life they balanced the enjoyment of the little things in life with the easing contemplation of the wonders of nature. They disappeared as a distinctive ethnic group around the turn of the eighteenth century, leaving as their legacy the preservation of this oasis, an exquisite vocabulary and some archeological remains that can be found at the Casa de la Cultura.
