Reading Time: 2 minutes

When people hear “elopement,” they usually think of two people secretly running away to get married. There’s a new meaning to the word today, though:  An elopement is still a well-planned wedding that brings with it all of the joys and memories as a big, traditional church wedding—just without all the stress and the big price tag.

Since your wedding day is more important than just about any other day in your life, it should be exactly what you and your spouse-to-be want it to be, not what others expect.  In lieu of the pageantry and fuss of a large event, some couples prefer an elopement: a small, private, more intimate ceremony, performed in a special place that will create memories for them.  Elopements may involve just the two people getting married and the person conducting the ceremony, or, at most, a few close friends to share the moment.

How Do You Plan an ElopementHow Do You Plan an Elopement?

In many respects, an elopement wedding is no different from any other.  You still need a license and must comply with the laws in the jurisdiction where you’re to be wed.  You still have to have someone to officiate the wedding, and you have to choose the place.  That means that travel plans need to be made well in advance, your wedding rings and attire should be packed and ready, and decisions should be made about what you tell your friends and family.  Do you want them to know that you’re getting married before you go?

And don’t forget about the photographer.  While you’ll no doubt take a lot of pictures yourselves, you’ll probably want something more than “selfies” to commemorate your special day.

Elopement Weddings How Do You Organize OnAfter the Fact

After the honeymoon and you’re ready to go back to your “real lives,” do you want a reception?  If you want a personal way to share your joy with your friends and family, it’s never too late to plan a delayed reception (especially if you want gifts!) or to send post-wedding announcements.  If you’re an especially private couple, maybe you don’t want to say anything at all!  It is, after all, your wedding.
