There must be something about the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve: People keep coming and coming to see it!

This ecological jewel—more than 27,000 acres of it—is nestled quietly away from the commercial resort areas of Baja California Sur, yet not too distant from other popular tourist attractions found only on the southern peninsula.  It’s the perfect site for nature lovers who’d appreciate a walk in one of the most ecologically diverse regions of Mexico:  If you like forests, deserts, and prairie land, they’re all here waiting for you!  Amidst it all, The Sierra La Laguna Mountain Range boasts the highest point in the state, El Picacho Peak, which, at over 7,000 feet, provides a panoramic view of these distinctive terrains.

The Reserve has something for everyone.  Wildlife lovers can come see the Black-Tailed Hare, the Grey Fox, or some of the other 40+ mammal species in the reserve, most of which are native to the area.  You like birds?  The Reserve is home to over 50 species of birds, including two types of hummingbirds, and is a stopping-off point for various migrating bird flocks.  And if you’re more into botany, you’ll find a smorgasbord of plant life, such as forest pines and oaks, not to mention  Elephant Trees, Skunk Trees, and all sorts of cacti.

Preserving for the Future

One of the Reserve’s strongest selling points is that, by law, it is untouched by human hands.  It enjoys   environmental protection under a presidential decree made in 1994, as well as being designated by UNESCO as a biosphere in 2003.  And it’s not just the surface itself that is a marvel :  Under the Reserve, in what once was a Lake (hence the name Laguna) lie six basins that supply fresh water to the majority of Baja.  It’s simply nature at its finest.
